Paro Taktsang History
Paro Taktsang, commonly known as the Tiger's Nest Monastery, is a sacred Buddhist site and cultural icon of Bhutan. It is built into a cliff face 900 meters (3,000 feet) above the Paro Valley. The site's history dates to the 8th century, when Guru Padmasambhava (also called Guru Rinpoche), who introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to Bhutan, is said to have meditated in a cave here after flying to the location on the back of a tigress. The monastery complex itself was built in 1692 by Gyalse Tenzin Rabg
